The news has been coming fast and furious from C.E.R.N. via their newsletter about the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). It officially started last Wednesday (September 10, 2008) and it looks like all of those scientists who said turning on the LHC would set off a chain reaction of events that would end with the Earth being swallowed up by a huge black hole were wrong (thankfully)! Check out this livecam view.
If you missed the fantastic article in the Montreal Gazette in July you can get up to speed on all of this by reading it here. Or if you find that too dry watch this YouTube.com video:
As they get set to bring the LHC up to full speed news from this continent, Chicago specifically and Fermilab to be exact, that they are searching for extra-dimensional visitors.
The detection of extra dimensions beyond the familiar four—the three dimensions of space and one of time—would be among the most earth-shattering discoveries in the history of physics. Now scientists at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, Ill., are designing a new experiment that would investigate tantalizing hints that extra dimensions may indeed exist.
It certainly looks like we’re knocking on the door of The Twilight Zone (and NOT to deliver a flaming bag of poo)…things are about to get very interesting.
